“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” Isaiah 40:8 (ESV)
In a world of uncertainty can we be certain of our God? Our verse, this morning came as part of a cheering word from Isaiah to God’s people Israel regarding the coming of the Messiah. In the chapter that precedes chapter 40, Isaiah has warned King Hezekiah of the forthcoming Babylonian captivity. Even though a dark cloud hung over God’s people with this news; God chose to remind them that his plan has not changed and his word does not need to be revised. “The glory of the LORD shall be revealed… for the mouth of the LORD has spoken.” (40:5 ESV)
The grass that is mentioned of here in verse 8 is explained in verse 6 “All flesh is grass, and its beauty is like the flower of the field” (40:6 ESV) The flesh withers and all the beauty of it fades. We are flesh. Our fleshly nature causes us to think in fleshly ways – how naturally we place our hope on things so perishable. It may be easy to trust in the word of God when life is going well but if we experience difficulty what will we choose to cling to? Something we are in control of that is here today and gone tomorrow just like the flowers and grass of the field? Or will we look to something that will stand forever?
The word of God will stand forever! If we want certainty – God’s word is where we will find it. God’s word is inerrant, that means without error. God’s word is infallible, it will not fail! (see 2 Peter 1:19-21 and Matthew 5:18).
