To truly understand the context of verse 26 we should really begin reading at verse 13 of chapter 3…
Blessed is the one who finds wisdom,
and the one who gets understanding,
for the gain from her is better than gain from silver
and her profit better than gold.
She is more precious than jewels,
and nothing you desire can compare with her.
Long life is in her right hand;
in her left hand are riches and honor.
Her ways are ways of pleasantness,
and all her paths are peace.
She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her;
those who hold her fast are called blessed.
The Lord by wisdom founded the earth;
by understanding he established the heavens;
by his knowledge the deeps broke open,
and the clouds drop down the dew.
My son, do not lose sight of these—
keep sound wisdom and discretion,
and they will be life for your soul
and adornment for your neck.
Then you will walk on your way securely,
and your foot will not stumble.
If you lie down, you will not be afraid;
when you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.
Do not be afraid of sudden terror
or of the ruin of the wicked, when it comes,
for the Lord will be your confidence
and will keep your foot from being caught.
Of all my regrets in life, the ones that are the most painful are the times where I did not exercise sound wisdom. Realising, I should have known better is bitter medicine. Proverbs 3 is all about the blessings of finding wisdom. King Solomon, advises the reader to find wisdom and keep hold of it because it will keep us out of trouble.
Where we put our confidence will determine the result we get. If we put our trust in insecure things or other people – who’s guess is as good as our own, we should not be surprised when things fall apart. Divine wisdom however, brings with it the richest of blessings. It is described in theses verses we have just read, as “better than gain from silver and her profit better than gold” (v 14). It is something that can only be given by God, divine wisdom is being in step with His ways. Obedient to his word and confident in it.
Can we say the Lord is our confidence? To be confident in who he is and what he says? At times, it can be a huge exercise in faith but in the end, there will be a blessing. Having the Lord as our confidence leaves little room to be fearful or afraid. My prayer this morning is that you may find peace and comfort by knowing the Lord is the protector over your life and will keep your foot from being caught. His divine wisdom guiding you through life regardless of whatever situation you may find yourself in.
